International Anton Rubinstein Competition double bass

The International Anton Rubinstein Competitions have been very popular for years. Especially in times marked by global crises, it is more important than ever to offer young musicians in their training and at the beginning of their career platforms on which they can test their skills and show themselves to the audience. That’s why our competitions have been taking place online since September 2021 – which enables candidates from all continents to participate.

The online implementation creates a particularly large public for the young participants, as the videos of all finalists are documented on our website and the winners are announced on our social media platforms.

The juries are made up of lecturers from the International Music Academy Anton Rubinstein and renowned guests.

Check out the 2022 double bass prizewinners:

1st Prize: Nina Bernat, USA

Double bassist Nina Bernat is the first prize winner at the 2019 International Society of Bassists
Solo Competition, Minnesota Orchestra Young Artists Competition, and Juilliard Double Bass Competition. At the age of 19, she performed as guest principal of the Israel Philharmonic under Adrás Schiff and Osmo Vänskä as well as with the New York Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel.

In the summer of 2022, she will be performing at the Grace Note Farm Music Festival, which she helped to organize, as well as the prestigious Marlboro Music Festival with artists such as Mitsuko Uchida.

She currently studies under Tim Cobb and cellist Astrid Schween at the Juilliard School as a proud recipient of the Kovner Fellowship.

2nd Prize: Chaemun Im, South Korea

3rd Prize: Jingyi Cui, China

Cui Jingyi, a sophomore in the orchestra department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, studies with Professor Luo Xu, a European bass player. From 2009 to 2015, I studied cello. In 2018, she studied the bass from Chen Hang, the former chief bass player of Hebei Symphony Orchestra.

She once won the gold medal in the China Singapore International Music Competition in Hebei, won the gold medal in the general high school group of the Tang Yun Jiahua International Bass Festival for two consecutive years, and was admitted to the Orchestra Department of Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2021 to learn from the European bass player Luo Xu.

4th Prize: Riccardo Baiocco, Italy

Riccardo Baiocco was born in 1998 and studied with Piermario Murelli at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milano, graduating in 2017 with full marks.
He continued his studies at the Stauffer Center of Strings of Cremona and Sermoneta with Franco Petracchi, the Accademia Chigiana of Siena with Giuseppe Ettorre and in 2022 he obtained the Master of Arts with Alberto Bocini at the Haute école de musique de Genève.

He has obtained the eligibility to collaborate as Tutti double bass in various orchestras including the OSR, the OCG, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Sinfonierochester Basel, Teatro alla Scala, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, ORT, Arena di Verona and as first double bass at the Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste.

5th Prize: Dmytro Rudyk, Ukraine

Born on August 3, 2000 in Ukraine. He studied violin at a music school, and from the age of 13 he played the double bass. Since 2015, he studied at the Ternopil Music College. Then, in 2019, he began studying at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen.

During the period of his professional musical development, he won prizes at national music competitions in the cities of Ukraine (Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipro). Participated in master classes of Carl Flesch Akademie in Banden Baden, Rhodius Akademie and Master classes in Weimar with Wies de Boeve, Dorin Marc, Janne Saksala, Christine Hoock, Gunars Upatnieks, Michinori Bunya, Dan Styffe, Petru Iuga. He had solo concerts with orchestras of Ukraine, performed in the Baden Baden Philharmonic and had concerts in chamber ensembles of various compositions.

6th Prize: Begum Aslan, Turkey

Begüm Aslan is a double bass player and a composer living in Berlin. She is studying in Barenboim-Said Akademie with conductor/double bassist Nabil Shehata and composer Zeynep Gedizlioglu. From September 2022, Aslan also continues her bass education with Gunars Upatnieks. She won various awards and competitions.

She had the opportunity to work with Daniel Barenboim, Michael Barenboim, Michael Wendeberg, Sennu Laine, Franco Petracchi, Bozo Paradzik, Dorin Marc, Artem Chirkov, Miloslav Gajdos, Dan Styffe and many more.
